Israeli, b. 1995 Shani Nizan is an Israeli artist based in New York. She is most well-known for her hybrid human-animal subjects, which she calls her Creatures. Nizan never received formal art training, but she practiced painting every day to refine her technique. She enlisted in the Israeli military at the age of 18 as an educational NCO in the 601st Battalion of Combat Engineering. She would use a pen to draw on her arm during the lengthy guarding shift to pass the time. The drawings gained popularity on Facebook and received praises from viewers who initially believed they were tattoos. In response, she began tattooing in 2017, training with tattoo artist Anat Hetzrony. A prestigious Berlin art studio run by Julia Rehme personally invited Shani to apply for a permanent post in 2018. During that time, she simultaneously toured in Europe and was a guest artist in tattoo studios including Puro Milano, De l'Art ou Du Cochon in Paris, Through My Third Eye in London, Dots to Lines, and many others. Shani relocated to New York City after spending two years working in Berlin. She soon left for Israel because of the COVID-19 outbreak. She presented a solo exhibition titled "I Didn't Like Jazz" in September 2020 at Beit Haamudim in Tel Aviv. "Drinking and Drawing NYC," a weekly gathering hosted at the Book Club Bar, was started by Nizan in 2021. She is currently employed as a resident artist at Inked NYC, a prominent tattoo gallery and workshop located in Manhattan that was founded by Inked Magazine.
