Nicola Miller Mungatopi (b. 1982) has painted with Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association since 2001. Nicola moves amongst the different communities of the Tiwi Islands and is also a member of Munupi Arts (Pirlangimpi) and Tiwi Design (Wurrumiyanga). She has worked in screen printing and painting across the Tiwi art centers. Nicola uses strong bold lines in her works and in line with all the artists at Jilamara Arts, celebrates the use of ochre, traditional earth pigments collected from the area and processed by hand in the studios. Ochre paintings come from Tiwi ceremonies, where ochre painted jilamara (design) is used for body painting to protect from mapurtiti (spirits of the dead). Each artist has their own style and design, which is used in both art & ceremony. They sometimes paint with the kayimwagakimi, also known as pwoja, which means bone. It is a traditional Tiwi painting 'comb', handmade from ironwood specifically for dot painting and is unique to the Tiwi. Nicola Miller is a traditional owner of the Milikapiti region. Her great grandparents are the late Alie and Polly Miller Mungatopi, who were distinguished elders and featured in the book The Goddess and the Moon Man: The Sacred Art of the Tiwi Aborigines by Sandra Le Brun Holmes, a significant historical document of Tiwi art and culture published in the 1990s. Nicola is a proud member of the Tiwi Islands "sistergirls" and is sometimes referred to as Nicolas Miller.
