Joyce Norwood- Impressionist This contemporary painter is a native of North Carolina. Born one of ten girls in a small mountain town in N.C. Her training began at the New York Art Students League, studying with Robert Brackman and William Draper. Joyce furthered her studies at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, where her eyes were opened to how "sunlight affects color" and how to interpret that light, thereby creating her radiant palette. Joyce works in oils, using knives as well as brushes. Her favorite subjects are figures, and boats. She is well known for her commission portraits of children on the beach, and has the ability to capture the likeness and mannerisms of her subjects. Joyce makes her home in Naples, Florida, and spends her summers in Apple Valley MN. Painting, playing tennis, and golf. Most of all enjoying her grandchildren nearby. Her happy paintings are a mere reflection of her spirit and positive approach to life. Artist Statement: As long as I can remember, I have had the desire to draw and capture the form of objects I admire, particularly the human form with all its myriad shapes. Drawing combined with painting in oils, allows me to produce harmonious color combinations that appeal to the senses, thereby drawing the viewer into the picture. The human eye instinctively perceives and responds to truth. I sometimes use heavy texture to give surface interest and a more contemporary feel to my paintings. In my art as well as in my life, I am very conscious of lighting and how it effects everything it touches, because it can change an object's color as well as its form.
