Eric Higgs grew up in an immersive creative environment of artists. His parents, passionate about painting and sculpture, provided an early interest in artistic expression. It was his grandmother that exposed him to the use of stone as a primary medium. As a child, he spent endless hours searching for fossils and rocks of all types on the family's farm on the Chesapeake Bay. Loving the permanence, geological history, and physicality of stone, it became his medium of choice. Higgs's designs are inspired by architecture, history, culture, and philosophical observations specific to each environment to encourage every viewer to identify with various aspects of his sculpture. He aims to maximize each sculpture's energy and intrigue by highlighting the materials' true nature and accentuating elegance through sophisticated forms. “To me, sculpture is a celebration of life inspired by a moment, a random arrangement, architectural elements, a dance movement, or a fleeting feeling that, for a moment, defines beauty. It is the ultimate freedom, a silent language, without rules or constraints." He believes his public, site-specific works should emphasize a location's identity, define space, inspire community, and create lasting intrigue as an integral part of their environment. He is drawn toward the challenge of engaging viewers with the believability of concept while maintaining an abstract genre. His goal is to transition viewers through a unique experience of beauty and creativity beyond the hectic nature of their lives, leaving each person feeling that some things are permanent and right in the world. Higgs' sculpture is part of private, public, and corporate collections, and has been showcased in solo and group shows throughout the U.S., France, and Japan
