Jessica Cantlin is a fine art landscape photographer from Seattle. Cantlin’s interest in photography began in her high school’s black and white analog darkroom. Cantlin’s love for photography accompanied her through her advanced education and first career as a successful criminal defense attorney. After 10 years in private practice, Cantlin decided to pivot, retiring from her legal practice, and diving back into photography. Cantlin studied at the Photography Center Northwest in Seattle, where she fell in love with the precision of fine art digital printing. In 2015, Cantlin opened her studio and began making prints for other professional photographers. Cantlin simultaneously began showing her work in Seattle and across other mediums in the United States. Cantlin travels the world with her cameras, curiosity, and love for wide open spaces. Blending texture, scale, and natural light with water, weather, and wildlife, Cantlin creates photographs that elegantly capture the intersection of humanity and the environment. Cantlin also works as a storyteller, discretely observing and capturing people in the landscape. Every detail of Cantlin’s photographs has significance. From the facial expressions and body language of the people she shoots, to the colors and textures of the landscapes that make up her sets. It is the juxtaposition of these details that lends an ordinary beach scene a surreal, dreamlike quality; a reminder to look closely. Cantlin’s work is best viewed in large-scale displays where the simplicity of a quiet landscape can achieve the drama of a grand vista, and the details of a complex scene can be noticed. Cantlin’s work is sold in limited editions and printed by her using archival papers and inks.
