Born and raised in Hong Kong to British parents, Steph Gimson began her creative journey as a prestigious London-based celebrity make-up artist. Her consummate creative skill combined with her professionalism and amiable disposition made her a go-to of famed English portrait-photographer-to-the-stars Antony Armstrong-Jones (perhaps better known as Lord Snowden, one-time spouse to HRH Princess Margaret and brother-in-law to Queen Elizabeth). Gimson traversed the European continent preparing minor royals, luminaries of the British stage, and iconic performers such as David Bowie and Judy Dench for glamorous photo shoots, media appearances, and red-carpet events. In her spare time, Gimson took up painting, and found she quite enjoyed the autonomy and creative control it afforded her. After a highly successful career in London and Europe, Gimson relocated to Sarasota, Florida, where painting became her primary focus. Largely self-taught as an artist, Gimson allows intuition to guide her creative process. Her technique involves an intensive, evolutionary layering, during which paint may be built up and sanded down, raked into, or incised with an awl. Collage elements may also be added. A silent dialog takes place between the artist and her canvas—each stage suggesting the next direction the work will take. Sometimes there is a subtle symbology at play, but oftentimes not. It is in some ways expressionist artwork born of spontaneity and feeling, yet it also contains the careful structure and intentionality that is only born from the practiced eye of a lifelong aesthete. This marriage yields work that is complex and balanced, with colors, values and textural elements coexisting in a harmony of measured agreement. The joy Gimson experiences in the act of creation is palpable in the paintings themselves, resulting in an intoxicating unification between joie de vivre and intelligent luxury. Gimson's work can be found in numerous private and public collections across the United States and in Europe.
