Atlanta-based artist, Angela Carter creates abstract collage works that celebrate her personal history, Caribbean heritage and the African Diaspora. Incorporating a range of diverse materials into each piece, Angela explores the cross-layers of her cultural legacy and the endless play between light and dark. She is interested in the idea of building and rebuilding. Placing different shapes over each other repeatedly in different locations. This allows for the original shape to be a subtle imprint. Her work is layered with memories and migration. She is also inspired by the improvisational nature of jazz and how it creates harmonious movement, seeing her work as a polyrhythmic way to play with line, shape, color and rhythm. Born in Suriname and raised in the Netherlands, she moved to Atlanta, to study Art Education and Mass Communications with a focus on Film.
