Jen Matthews, a brand designer and artist living in Raleigh, North Carolina, is one who never takes herself (or her subject matter) too seriously. Her work is an effortless blend of abstract shapes, graphic elements, and vibrant colors — resulting in textured layers that suggest energy, playfulness and even a little chaos just beneath the surface. Her unique point of view — reimagining everyday life through an electric, dynamic lens — has led to features on HBO, HGTV, in Anthropologie and galleries across the southeast. "A maximalist at heart, I approach my paintings with whatever feels right in the moment — experimenting with layers of color, texture, pattern and movement — with the goal of pulling together a simplified, visual story. My most recent work has been focused on exploring the theme of letting go of self-control and embracing the unexpected delight that can show up when you do. Each painting is an evolution from the last, as my practice is more about discovery than repetition."
