J Muzacz is an innovative public artist with a keen eye for social dynamics. Originally from Houston and a graduate of the University of Texas in Sociology, Muzacz went on to live and work abroad for the better half of a decade, painting murals across the US and in countries as far-reaching as New Zealand, Taiwan, and Japan. Now based in Austin, TX, Muzacz has dedicated himself to community building through teaching, mentoring, and creating spaces for artists to connect and uplift each other. Since diving into mosaic making in 2019, Muzacz has created over a dozen large-scale mosaics and co-founded The Mosaic Workshop, an artist-run creative hub at Something Cool Studios. Through free and low-cost workshops as well as collaborative mosaic mural projects, Muzacz empowers community members to learn the art of mosaic making. Past clients and commissions include Meta, Lake Austin Spa Resort, Fairtrade America, Vice Media, Anheuser-Busch, City of Austin, HUE Mural Festival, Georgetown Arts & Culture, Flint (MI) Public Art Project, CBRE, Transwestern, Troublemaker Studios, IDEA Schools, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and more. Recent studio work involves Muzacz’s signature “Digital Impressionism” in over a dozen and counting pixelated pop art mosaic panels showcasing vintage and modern aerosol spray paint cans in a series he calls Tools of the Trade, inspired by his roots as a street artist.
