ARTIST STATEMENT Each of my paintings is a collection of memories and observations from a country or place that has left me with lasting impressions. After many travel adventures I have so many stories and sights to share. My intent is to create paintings that can be widely understood and enjoyed by a broad demographic. I want to encourage my audience to take the time to see, observe, study, connect and find joy and peace in their surroundings, whether traveling afar or walking through their immediate neighbourhood. For many months of each year my immediate neighbourhood is Brigus, Newfoundland. I review personal photographs and my sketch books before choosing subject material for my next painting. Quick sketches and watercolours are the next steps to planning compositions before putting paint to final canvas. I love the immediacy and portability of watercolour, colour pencil, pastels, but oil on canvas is my preferred playground. I exercise a generous margin of artistic licence when creating final compositions. I reposition or add elements to scenes, exagerate colours, play with light and shadow, perspective, all for more impactful results.
