Tessa is a full-time artist ,art educator and mother of 3 daughters, based in Trinidad. Tessa is currently pursuing a PhD in Cultural Studies; her project is a troubling of the Caribbean archive and art canon as she investigates the silenced art histories of her foremothers. Inspired by the beauty of the mundane, everydayness of life and based on a combination of photographs, sketches and memory Tessa creates visual images which explore themes surrounding identity ,heritage and our connection to nature and the land. Tessa is primarily a watercolor artist as the vibrant color, fluidity and textures produced from the medium, capture the Caribbean essence and it is suitable to tropical conditions as it is quick drying and environmentally friendly, she however often combines handmade papers and cultural embellishments to reflect her own mixed heritage Trinidadian aesthetic.Tessa Alexander has an associate degree in fashion design and an MFA in Cultural Studies (her project and investigation of the impact of mothering and motherhood on art practice). Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and can be found in collections around the world.
