Abie Loy Kemarre (b. 1972) is a significant contemporary Central Australia artist, and a third generation Utopia painter who comes from an outstanding painting family. Abie started painting in 1994 under the guidance of her grandmother, renowned artist Kathleen Petyarre. Abie's paintings show the detailed designs of her stories using fine dot-work and contemporary designs. Abie Loy Kemarre was entrusted with the custodial rights to depict the Bush Hen theme by her grandfather. At the simplest level, her Bush Hen Paintings represent the bush hen travelling in search of bush seeds scattered across the country. Rather than present an unfolding narrative, she focuses on a single element to represent the complex knowledge of bush medicine and vital resources that are embedded within the story. The energy and dynamism of ceremony are reflected in dazzling optical effects, achieved by her meticulous repetition of the detailed leaf motif. The motif is layered to create the sensation of undulating movement that radiates across the canvas. Other themes in Abie’s paintings are the Bush Medicine Leaf Dreaming, Emu Dreaming, and Sandhills and Body Paint Designs including Awelye. Awelye is the word for women's ceremonies and refers specifically to the designs applied to a women's body as part of a ceremony. This spiritual and meditative performance reflects the nurturing role of women in Aboriginal society and is never done in the presence of men. She was selected as a finalist for the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) in 1997 and 2001. Her work is held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), The Seattle Art Museum (WA), and in Australia in the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, and Adelaide University Art Collection. She is represented in major private collections including Kelton Foundation, Levi-Kaplan Collection, Kerry Stokes Collection, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Commission Collection and Festival of Arts Foundation Collection.
