Sarah Bird is an interdisciplinary artist and a PhD candidate at UC Santa Cruz in Film and Digital Media. Her current work explores the relationships between humans and other beings in the natural world in order to catalyze us to protect earth’s precious biodiversity. Bird’s current photographs focus on trees, elevating them to their essential place in our web of being, and reveal the beauty and biological wealth of these great protagonists of the living world. The portraits restore the tree to the place from which it had been stripped by anthropocentrism. Her work is informed by Deep Ecology of the1970s, recent scientific discoveries concerning trees’ relationships among other plant and insect species, and trees’ vital role in carbon sequestration. A dual US-Australia national, Sarah grew up in France, the UK, and the United States. She earned a BA from Amherst College and an MFA from California College of the Arts. Honors include the Arts Corps Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is based in Brooklyn, New York and Santa Cruz, California.
