Josh Hernandez is a native Californian. A true phenomenon, his aptly chosen nom-de-plume is Mad Charcoal. For all his accomplishments and prolific output, the super-talented Josh is nonetheless modest. Naturally creative, he was that enviously gifted kid who, whilst he could not pay attention in class, doodled effortlessly in his textbooks, all the while thinking of the next cool subject to invent and depict. Josh has been blessed to continue in that creative vein for his livelihood. Josh pursued graphic design to formalize his inherent inventiveness rather than fine art and attained his BSD (Bachelor of Science in Design) from Arizona State University. His design industry experience included logo design and illustration - an avocation, if you will, from his erstwhile artistic inclinations. One fine day, in the midst of his design career, his desire to create art arose from the ashes and he revived his first love - he began to draw and paint again. The renewed attraction was a revelatory experience and, this time, he no longer doodled. Even without formal fine art training, his talent spilled onto the substrate in exuberant abundance. In a reflection of his instinctive style Josh branded himself as Mad Charcoal. He creates pieces in various media that range from charcoal to oil and acrylic paints, and mixed media, depending on subject and size. His focus is largely on abstract-realist figurative work with an emphasis on achromatic values and expressive nature.
