Through my ceramic sculptures I seek to capture a moment in time, express nature’s powerful forces, and celebrate the earth’s elemental palette of colors. My minimalist sculptures evoke fire, desiccation and desertification and, ultimately, the transformation of landscapes whether from natural or human causes. I explore these concepts using simple, minimalist forms. My recent work focuses on geometric forms — spheres, hemispheres, cubes, wedges — shapes that define our world, from soap bubbles to the stars above us.My works are quiet, but their surface cracks resonate with contained energy and evoke a sense of power — they might have been charred by fire or cracked by drought. I draw from my academic background in science and art to create my work, using natural phenomena to create a cracked surface and my own mixtures of water soluble metals for coloration. My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in the 62nd Faenza Prize in Faenza, Italy (2023), the International Ceramics Competition in Mino, Japan (2018), and the NCECA Competition in the United States (2017), among others.I invite viewers to imagine what proceeded and might follow the moment I have recorded in clay while reflecting on nature, the effects of climate change, and how our world is changing over time.
