Using traditional cottonwood root, Justin Lomatewama’s work represents what he proudly calls the “archaic style of carving”: creating what Katsina dolls looked like before metal tools and sandpaper were introduced to the Hopis hundreds of years ago. He shapes and smooths the cottonwood root with sandstone, not sandpaper, and he uses desert plant twigs to attach all items, not glue. HIs works depict Haheyi, the Mother of Katsina who embodies motherhood, and the Hand Runner and Chili Runner who compete against men and boys in a race for rain.
