PAINTING, FOIL, OIL ON CANVAS UNITED KINGDOM Jeremy Houghton is an artist who captures great occasions and extraordinary journeys, with a particular focus on themes of light, space, and the passage of time. His work is distinguished by his ability to illuminate the spaces where bodies linger, shimmer, move, and often take flight, creating dynamic scenes that resonate with energy and life. Over the past twenty years, Houghton has been invited to document the lives of several high-profile communities, including Windsor Castle for HM Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, and the competitors at the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympic Games. The collection currently showcased at the gallery comes from Houghton’s residency at Kamfer’s Dam in South Africa, where his studies of flamingos were created to raise both awareness and funds for the conservation of these beautiful endangered birds. While Houghton’s style is versatile, he is constantly exploring the potential of negative space to convey light. His work often references the Japanese aesthetic concept of ‘ma,’ which translates to ‘gap’ or ‘pause.’ This concept helps him balance the relationship between different areas of an image, allowing his subjects to glimmer in the delicate space between figuration and abstraction.
