Artist Statement: These portrait collages are created from 3 centuries of photography and reference court paintings from the Middle Ages and early American folk art. I combine my photography with historic imagery, telling stories that, through symbolism, explore themes of nature, race, home, sexuality, religion, death and the afterlife. My interests lie in the flawed processes and alluring characters found in the daguerreotypes, tintypes, and albumen prints of early photography. The poses, expressions, attire, landscapes and architecture are among the elements I digitally combine with my photography to create these mysterious stories.
