My work is about escaping. Whether it is from the everyday, or back into treasured childhood memories. Summer holidays when you were a kid, a teenager, an adult, with friends and family. My images document daily life along the coastal fringe. They represent my lifelong passion for the beach, swimming, spending time soaking up the sun, and my strong preference for bare feet. It is where I feel at home and comforted. I often swim first and then pick up my camera as I want to blend with the scene I am photographing. I have always been the quiet observer and photography has become my means of being heard. I search for structure in a landscape, whether man-made or simply the positioning of people in statuesque poses. My compositions are informed by dynamic symmetry, lines and patterns which lead the eye on a journey through the image. Strong graphic elements and modernist architecture set the framework. Early mornings or blazing hot afternoons are my preference. Against this backdrop I wait for people to do their thing and surprisingly they always position themselves more perfectly than I could ever have instructed. I favour strong colours to give vitality and strength to my images, but I am not adverse to some moody black & white. My images are about remembering what it feels like to dig your toes in the sand, jump off a jetty or simply submerging yourself in calming waters.
