Artists paint what they know, and Pittsburgh artist Daniel Marsula knows his region. Born and raised in a small town about an hour east of Pittsburgh, he has spent more than 30 years capturing the atmosphere of Western Pennsylvania, the rural and urban landscapes, and the people. Marsula says he is not sure if he chose his career or his career chose him. His love for art began at an early age. For as long as he can remember, he has been intrigued by the sensation of putting a pencil to a blank sheet of paper or touching a brush to canvas. Dan balances a dual career working as an award winning illustrator and designer, while pursuing a career in painting. Watercolor was his primary medium in his early career. The traditional, transparent watercolor technique enhanced his depictions of rural subjects, inspired by artists such as Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. Daniel is recognized as an accomplished watercolorist who has earned national and international awards, as well as signature membership in the prestigious American Watercolor Society. Articles about his work have been published in American Artist Magazine, Artist Magazine, North Light Books and Rockport Publishers. Dan believes that artistic growth comes through change. As his career evolved, his medium of choice has shifted to oils, a change motivated by his study of Pennsylvania artist Edward Redfield and a group of Buck’s County artists. His subjects have also become more diverse. Many of his paintings portray urban-industrial and urban settings and reflect his love of Western Pennsylvania’s rich history and diverse landscapes. He strives to capture quiet moments with a harmony of shape and shadow - strong compositions that create a timeless connection between the artist and community. Dan’s art can be found in private and corporate collections.
