Michael has been drawing since the age of four. This obsession was facilitated by his father's contribution of reams of used blueprints from his job as a draftsman – which his mother then carefully cut into manageable pieces with a large butcher knife – providing Michael with unlimited surfaces on which to draw and to practice, practice, practice. He illustrated his first book at the age of 17, receiving various state-level awards and earning acknowledgment and scholarships from the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, as well as an art scholarship to Phillips Academy at Andover and a scholarship to Parsons School of Design. After a stint in the Army, Michael resumed his studies at Parsons, graduating on the Dean’s List with a BFA in Illustration. This was followed by a 24-year career in the New York City garment industry, where he worked as an Art Director and apparel designer for licensed and private label companies. He returned to fine art in his 40s, first becoming active in Michael Alan Alien’s Draw-a-thon Theater and later serving as a principal of the 950 Hart Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where he and his partners presented 24 art shows, pop-ups, and drawing events over a two-year period ending in 2012. After a particularly challenging period, Michael resumed making art in 2014 and currently shows regularly not only at Fountain House Gallery but also at The Bridge Art Institute in NYC. He is working on his New York Portrait project, creating elaborate life drawings of everyday New Yorkers alongside large and small abstract works and metaphysically inclined narrative paintings. Michael also makes and teaches comics. He is writing his first novel and is planning a website.
