B. 1960 | France Christophe Jacrot is a contemporary, climate photographer who tells poetic photographic stories through his lens about metropolises and regions that are haunted by rain showers and snow flurries. Jacrot’s interest in photography started as an adolescent but his first creative endeavors were expressed through film. He directed several short films, most of which received awards. Eventually Jacrot returned to his first passion, photography. His current series was born out of a commercial project in Paris involving cities in inclement weather. “The weather was desperately bad, which gave me the idea to photograph several somewhat more untraditional images of Paris to capture these amazing ambiances that few photograph.” As a result of this project in 2007 he opened his first exhibition at the Lucernaire which was followed by the publication of his photography book, Paris in The Rain (Edition, Chêne.) Ever since then, Jacrot really found his niche shooting strictly in bad weather and in the face of extreme conditions creating poignant imagery that brings an unexpected beauty to light. “I try to create something new with the illusion of reality that photography offers. I like my visual world to be self-sufficient. These are neither documentary photos nor conceptual photos. Rather, they are images in which time and space come together.” His photography merges immediacy and intensity that stays with you and invites reflection. He has exhibited extensively in France and variously in the US, Asia and other European cities. His new major book, Lost in the Beauty of Bad Weather, was published by teNeues in 2023. In The Beauty of Bad Weather Series Bad weather? Everyone rushes home, only Christophe Jacrot grabs his camera and sets off. The French photographer is considered the master of bad weather photography. He specifically looks for rain, snowstorms and fog to take his grandiose, beautiful, melancholic shots. For it is precisely this mood that inspires the photographer to take his unique pictures. In his photographs, you see empty streets that seem almost mystical in the very special light conditions of the bad weather fronts. Few people, reduced, concentrated scenes framed by snowflakes or raindrops, this essence in the pictures is what makes Jacrot's photographs so appealing.
