There's many ways to make a horse, donkey, lion, cow…in art. I chose fused glass, and here's why. As a scientist, I felt the right side of my brain needed scratching, so I took as many art classes as I could, until I took fused glass. My heart melted into this art form. Just as I rushed to the lab to see how my experiments turned out, I run to the kiln the next day to see what I had created in glass. Fused glass is the epiphany of both science and art for me. Retired from science, I started the Glass Menagerie, a shop in Llano, Texas, where I sold my glass art and that of 15 local glass artists. The shop went down just before COVID, for which I am grateful. Now, I fuse a menagerie of glass animals of my own creation in my home studio and sell in galleries, online and at juried art shows. My work is a unique, contemporary portrayal of animals, presented as framed pieces of art. I make layers of glass that are fused separately in the kiln. The initial layer establishes the framework and values of colors. Other firings occur after the addition of elements, including items created by flameworking and glass painting. The result is a colorful, vibrant animal that will bring you joy forever.
