Born on March 2, 1936, in Vancouver B.C., Robert Murray is often considered one of Canada's foremost abstract sculptors. Known for his vibrant sheet-metal sculptures, Murray has pieces in exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Canada. Raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he moved to New York in his early 20s on a Canada Council grant. In Saskatoon, he studied at the Regina College School of Art where he began his career as a landscape painter. Drawing from different natural themes, many of his pieces are named after people, places, or things he has encountered. Murray has received the Order of Canada award (2000) and also the Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Grant Award for Lifetime Achievement (2018).
