Crystal Liu’s ethereal paintings of mountains, flowers, and sunrises combine the aesthetics of traditional Chinese landscape paintings with a contemporary approach to abstraction and material experimentation. The artist uses metallic pigments, custom-made marbleized paper, gouache, and ink to make her elegant scenes. Liu employs a flattened perspective, yet her surfaces shimmer with depth and light. Liu received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and has exhibited in Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, San Francisco, Singapore, and Toronto.
