Our contemporary clay vessels and sculpture come out of Mexico’s red earth mountains and indigenous potters from Colectivo 1050, an artist collective of seven communities in Oaxaca, Puebla, and Chiapas. Each has its own unique culture and language, all innovating on the area’s 2,000 year old traditions. San Marcos Tlapazola potters pool special talent to turn out elegant, organically shaped perforated pots in terra cotta and also obsidian, inspired by the traditional Pichancha, a ceramic colander used for rinsing corn. Their perfectly smooth wheat colored vessels are marked in rich brown splatter.
