I am a painter from Beaufort, NC, with a degree in journalism from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a major in Fine Art from Meredith College. Until recently, I was primarily a pastel and oil painter, and I jury into Pastel Society Exhibitions regularly. In 2017, I won the Wilmington Annual Fine Art Exhibition. I completed two portraits for the Faces of the Fallen Project at Arlington National Cemetery. I began painting as a child with Promila Sen at the Arts Council in Wilson, NC, and I am forever blessed by her mentorship and encouragement. I am thankful for the pivotal foundation I received at the Governor's School in high school and for all of my other teachers and patrons along the way.In my traditional oil and pastel paintings, I interprete mostly landscapes that emphasized vast skies, water, vegetation, and life. In these works, time of day is indicated by color choices and the direction of light. Most paintings have strong shapes, organic lines and movement, as felt in nature, inviting the viewer to exhale. In 2017, I began to incorporate fluid and layered mixed media to give three-dimensional textures. I have two basic processes. One is to build up the surface with mixtures of putty, sand, crumbled eggshells and other found objects and silver or gold leaf, then to paint and wash layers of acrylics. These pieces usually tend to be more representational, for example underwater imaginings. Alternatively, I may use fluid acrylic pouring and top it with chunks of glass and beads, then cover the canvas with resin. These pieces are abstracted, yet they convey motion with organic, lacey edges between colors, pops of “cells,” and sometimes accidental little images within areas of the paintings, like pictures we imagine in clouds formations. The medium and approach is informed by the subject of the painting. This may include traditional charcoal, colored pencils, pastels and oils, especially for portraits and pet portraits, where I capture a very close likeness. I enjoy sharing videos and commentary about the stages of my work and appreciate the interaction it stimulates with art lovers and my collectors. I am blessed to live in a beautiful seaside town and to give voice to the magnificence of our world in spite of the noise and threats to it. May God's peace flow through these works to everyone who views it.
