Elizabeth Kunoth Kngwarreye is a prominent Utopia artist who lives in Mosquito Bore, about 250 kilometers northeast of Alice Springs, in the heart of the desert in the Northern Territory. She is the daughter of the late artist Nancy Petyarre, niece to Gloria Petyarre, and granddaughter of Emily Kame Kngwarreye, some of the most revered artists in Aboriginal art. Elizabeth is one of the custodians of her people’s traditions. She paints finely detailed aspects of the Yam Dreaming narrative that belongs to Anmatyarre people of the Central Desert. Her closely dotted paintings reflect the precise style of Utopia artists. Through thousands of tiny rhythmic stokes, Elizabeth depicts the movement of the pencil yam seeds (kame) as they are thrown into the wind to be re-harvested. Elizabeth Kunoth Kngwarray began her painting career in 2005 and has been included in major exhibitions and art prizes over the past decade. Elizabeth also exhibits with her husband, fellow artist Cowboy Loy Pwerle.
