Kathleen Hope is an Arizona-based artist recognized for her distinctive use of cement, pigment, and mixed media to create contemporary abstract works rooted in texture, balance, and material exploration. With a background in design, she approaches each composition with a refined architectural sensibility, building surfaces that feel grounded, tactile, and quietly expressive. Her cement-based paintings are defined by layered depth and organic movement. Kathleen blends mineral pigments, oxides, and aggregates into her cement mixtures, allowing each piece to evolve through a process of building, subtracting, and refining. The resulting surfaces hold a natural sense of history and atmosphere, echoing elements of the desert landscape she lives within. Her palette leans toward soft neutrals and mineral tones, creating works that elevate modern interiors through their calm presence and sculptural quality.Kathleen’s work has garnered a national collector base, particularly among clients drawn to contemporary design, organic materials, and artwork that brings both serenity and sophistication into a space. She continues to expand her practice while remaining committed to the material honesty and quiet depth that define her signature style. Artist Statement: My practice is centered around material. Cement is the foundation of my work because it carries a sense of honesty, permanence, and grounded beauty. When I mix cement with pigments, aggregates, and additional mediums, I am creating surfaces that behave almost like natural formations. They settle, crack, absorb, and shift in ways that guide the direction of each piece.Texture and tone are the primary languages in my studio. I build, sand, layer, and refine until the surface reaches a balanced state that feels both strong and serene. I am influenced by the landscape of the Arizona desert and the quiet minimalism found in nature. These elements inform my palettes and the meditative quality that emerges throughout my work.I aim to create compositions that offer stillness. Each piece is a record of a slow, deliberate process and the conversation between material and intention. Through cement, I explore how something industrial can become soft and contemplative, and how subtle shifts in texture and light can shape the emotional presence of a space. My work invites viewers to experience that sense of calm, connection, and grounded simplicity.
