Margaret Roberts was born in Sacramento and resided in Pebble Beach from 1966 until her passing at age 97 in 2011. She was a long-time member of the Artist Colony. In 1974 she was accepted as an Artist Member of the Carmel Art Association, where she served on the Board of Directors multiple times. Margaret painted exclusively in watercolor. Having been a student of art history, she served as a docent at the Monterey Museum for eight years and also established the Monterey Peninsula Watercolor Society in 1971, acting as their director for twenty-eight years. Roberts studied at the University of Oregon and attended workshops with several distinguished watercolor artists including Rex Brandt and Robert E. Wood. Her own best known paintings were landscapes. She was accepted into many competitions including the American Watercolor Society in New York City. She was a great admirer of the watercolors of H.M.W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and Percy Gray. Like these watercolorists, she constantly observed the effect of light on the landscape, hoping to create an inner glow in her paintings. Margaret was preceded in death by Raymond Roberts, her husband of more than forty years.
