Brenda MorrisonJune 23, 1936 - June 10, 2020 Born and raised Southern England, Brenda Morrison received a five-year scholarship to Bournemouth College of Art. Brenda then traveled extensively, living and painting in France, before returning to England for further studies at the London School of Art. This was followed by more travels around Europe. In 1957 she emigrated to the United States and settled in Carmel. Here she continued her art studies, taking classes at Monterey Peninsula College and from CAA Artist Member Keith Lindberg for many years. In 1977 Brenda was juried into the Carmel Art Association, where she sat on the Board of Directors several times and served as Board President in 1980, 1986, and 1987. She was an avid gardener who used the flowers she grew for her still lifes in oil. Her contemporary genre paintings focused on inviting, everyday scenes and peaceful, domestic settings devoid of the people whom her viewers always sensed were standing just out of view. All of her work including her landscapes and seascapes emphasized rich color and design. Brenda was a powerful woman with a wry English sense of humor. She had strong opinions but could laugh easily. A dedicated artist, she was an integral part of a group of local artists, writers, and thinkers who met every afternoon for coffee, trying to solve the world’s problems or at least laugh at them. Brenda once declared, “Painting is my primary interest. I work every day and would rather be at the easel than doing anything else.” Brenda passed away on June 10, 2020.
