Joined Carmel Art Association in 1965. George DeGroat was educated at the Newark School of Fine Arts, Newark Preparatory College (B.A.); Art School of Detroit Society of Art. After moving to California, he met many of the figurative painters of the Bay Area. Later he settled in Southern California and taught drawing and painting at San Diego State University, Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles County. From 1964, while at Otis, he maintained a studio in Big Sur. He moved permanently to the Peninsula in 1976 to take the position of Artist-In-Residence at the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art and Director of the Museum's Extended Education Program. Member of the American Association of University Professors.
