My paintings are populated by recurring organic forms that echo the simultaneous strangeness and familiarity of the natural world. The work joins our idealized, mediated notions of nature with the complex experience of being an inevitable participant in it. Contrasting painting processes, from immediate mark making to complex, layered microcosms, coexist in a space that fluctuates between states of growth and deterioration. These porous environments pay homage to the precarious, often unseen systems that surround us. With references to the decorative and glimpses of the grotesque, my work considers our contradictory relationship to nature and how it persistently permeates our subconscious experience.
