A Texas Singer-Songwriter with a widely diverse background, Rex was an integral presence in the 60’s psychedelic music revolution, the Texas outlaw music of the ’70s, the singer-songwriter genre of the ’80s, influential in developing the concept of “house concert” in the ’90s and internationally appreciated after 25 tours of Europe. At some point over 40 years ago, Rex started carving bone into hat bands and other adornments for himself and his musician friends. Eventually he learned silversmithing and quickly became known for his silver and bone jewelry. His travels took him to Alaska, where he made a strong connection with Inuit tribespeople. He participated in a receiving ceremony to purchase artifacts of their ancestors, including those made of fossilized walrus and mammoth tusk, roughly 10K and 100K years old respectively. With deep reverence for the materials and where they come from, he has been crafting one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry art using these sacred objects, along with bone, Cape Buffalo horn, and occasionally amber or salvaged historic piano keys.Rex grew up in and resided in Comfort, Texas, with his wife and business manager, Kelly Coppage Foster. MixHaus Gallery is proud to be the exclusive hometown gallery for Rex Foster Jewelry. "I have developed a unique art form independent of other mainstream jewelers. My path has led me to borrow from the ancients. The first amulets and extra attire of humans in their evolution down from the trees and out of the caves were probably made from bones. Crafting and wearing bone is a very special way of connecting with the “Great Mystery.” Bone is also one of the softest and most beautiful materials available. Over the years, I have added to my designs using materials such as ancient walrus and woolly mammoth tusks. I feel I am merely, through my simple design eye, fixing these pieces so others can carry them around with them before the pieces return to dust, as we all ultimately must. I retain reverence for life while appreciating the beauty of bones."— Rex Foster "It is with great reverence and appreciation that we celebrate the life and many creations of Rex Foster. Whether you knew him through his words and song; his inimitable works of art in silver, bone and fossilized tusk; or his friendship and generosity of spirit, you were fortunate. He invited us to be present, to create and express and share, to know what life in each moment is worth. We recall Rex as a charming, soulful artist and musician who brightened the gallery anytime he visited. We have already missed him during the long months of his illness, and his physical absence will continue to be felt. But he is still with us. MixHaus Gallery will continue representing Rex Foster Jewelry as his hometown gallery, featuring one-of-a-kind sterling silver jewelry crafted by Rex, as well as designs created and inspired by him. We will begin adding stock to Rex's online shop on our website to facilitate online purchases for you far-flung Rex foster friends, fans and admirers. A memorial celebration is being discussed for the Spring when the busy holidays are behind us and weather allows for the kind of gathering Rex would want." I’ll be waiting in the garden in the first flowers of Spring. Standing in the sun shower feel the softly falling rain. I’ll be gone…like the wind, flying free. I’ll be gone, don’t cry for me. I’ll be gone, but I’ll never leave.”— Rex Foster, from his song Take My Ashes
