Bio:Lorraine DeProspo lives and works in Provincetown Massachusetts. She is a painter of the sea and sky, using oils and cold wax as her medium. Her work reflects a deep and reverent relationship with nature, with a particular affinity to ‘that special light’, and the ever-elusive quality of fog. Her painting style is minimalist and easily leans toward the abstract. Lorraine employs a meticulous blending of color that produces the moody, ethereal feel that defines her work. The direct addition of a cold wax medium to her paint adds depth, subtlety, and a soft patina to the imagery. She paints solely with a palette knife, squeegee, and a few scratching tools. Her work defies the category of art imitating nature, presenting a visual interpretation of the essence of the experience of time at the water’s edge. Her artistic vision is defined by a keen focus on capturing that which is felt more than seen.Lorraine’s work is included in the permanent collection of Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City, as well as with individual collectors throughout the States. She has been featured in The Woven Tale Press Magazine, the Provincetown Independent and PTownie Magazine. Artist Statement:I live and work by the sea….over time this has informed and transformed both myself and my work….I find I have grown attuned to the rhythms of the sea, to her nuances through the days and the seasons, not unlike the relationship one has with an old friend…every day is a ‘beach day’ for me, be it enveloping fog, the crisp chill of winter, or a warm sunny day…everyday there is something new, as the temperament of the sea can change in a moment - calm, angry, seductive, beguiling, - always offering a thought to ponder, something to draw upon… morning mist, or that eerie calm and intoxicating scent of the sea hanging in the air after a rainfall captivate me, inspire and inform my work as a painter, work which is intuitive, minimalist, and leans toward the abstract… I paint with a palette knife and squeegee, in oils and cold wax…a meticulous blending of color creates the richness and subtlety I seek, and the addition of a wax medium lends further depth to the imagery and the moody, atmospheric overtone that defines my style. At the easel, my vision lies in capturing the essence of that which is felt more than seen, visually eliciting that subtle yet familiar vibration within, that which draws us back time and again, to breath deep and reverently in the presence of this incredible force of nature. I invite the viewer to step into the work, to linger, to reflect, to imagine…
