Artist Bio Kathleen McCloud was born White Plains, NY and spent her formative years nearDetroit, which instilled her love of water and trees. She’s lived in northern NM since1989. Her background as an arts writer and textile restorer informs her work as a visualartist. Her art has been exhibited since1996 and is included in private and publiccollections including the New Mexico Museum of Art and NM Art in Public Places. Artist’s Statement Rooted in traditional materials and processes, my printmaking, painting, and mixed-media constructions reflect a singular fascination: interdependency. Each piece mapsthe relationships between things, how everything reaches toward something. Throughthe language of material, color, allegory, and metaphor, I trace those connections andinvite the viewer into a world of time travel through the imagination.Although digital connectivity enables me to access the world with my fingertips, it’s thepre-industrial world of earth materials timed by seasons and revered and reckoned withthrough art, song, ritual and folk medicine that calls to me.For over thirty-five years I have lived in La Cieneguilla, New Mexico, a land grantcommunity near Santa Fe where the living history of indigenous Pueblo and Spanishsettlement continues to shape daily rhythms. The geographic and cultural story writteninto this landscape roots me in the past and influences my present, evident in the watercrisis we are facing as the climate warms. Daily walks, participating in environmentalcommunity projects and engaging with plants through botanical dying and papermakingfrom locally sourced wetland materials grounds me. The multilayered process of makinginvites imagery where past and present converge as in a dream.Interdependency lives within my studio as well. There is a constant and complexnegotiation between contemporary technology, traditional art-making methods, andhorticultural practice. Unexpectedly, my studio practice has become a testament tomedieval and contemporary collaboration, where the light-table, iPhone, brushes, anetching press, dye pots and seed trays cohabit. Each helps me discover theconnections between the visible and invisible and how to enter doors beyond thefamiliar and into the world where life lives in the question- what if? Born: White Plains, NY USACurrent:Painting, printmaking, fiber/botanical dying and constructions, installationSanta Fe, New Mexico, USAArt ExhibitionsSolo Exhibitions2023 Song of Gloria Mundi, GF Contemporary, Santa Fe, New Mexico2022 How to Roll a Mean Tortilla; CleaRsky.art ; mixed-media installation /performanceWillard, NM March15-April 302021 Fresh Air, GF Contemporary, Santa Fe, New Mexico2018 Meta-Tourist, GF Contemporary, Santa Fe, New Mexico2013 LoudWHISPER, Ernesto Mayans Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico2011 Futurology: Welcome to the Third Wave, Axle Projects,multi-media installation2011 Inna Gadda Da Vida, Ernesto Mayans Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico2005 Co-Evolving, Ernesto Mayans Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico2004 Mindspring, Ernesto Mayans Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico2003 Be Still- Everything is Turning, Ernesto Mayans Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico2002 The Other Hemisphere of Being, Ernesto Mayans Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico2001 Wing & Root, Ernesto Mayans Gallery, Santa Fe, New MexicoSelect Group Exhibitions2025 The New City of Ladies, New Mexico chapter of National Museum of Women in the Artsjuried show, Turner Carroll Gallery, Santa Fe, NM2022 The Printer’s Proof: Artist and Printer Collaborations, Albuquerque MuseumFebruary 19-May 15.2020 Feminist Art in the Era of Trump, juror Lucy LippardAxle Contemporary, September-November2019 AMOA/Biennial 600 Fiber + Textile, Amarillo Museum of Art,2018 Wilderness Acts: Art in Nature, Santa Fe Botanic Gardens/Leonora Curtin WetlandsPreserve, Axle Projects,2016 Flats and Rounds, 2-person exhibition, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI,2016 In Color, print archives 10Grand Press, 333 Montezuma Arts, Santa Fe, NM2016 Banned, Santa Fe Community Gallery, Santa Fe, NM2015 Re-imagined, Cornell Museum of Art-Delray Beach, FL2015 Axle Inside at Peter’s Projects, Santa Fe, NM2012 Odes & Offerings, collaborative exhibition of poetry and the visual arts, Santa FeArts Commission Community Gallery, (catalogue published 2013)2011 Mining the Unconscious, Santa Fe Community Gallery, Santa Fe, NM2010 TEXAS NATIONAL:2010, Group show, Cole Art Center, Judy Pfaff juror,2007 ORIGINALS 2007, New Mexico Women in the Arts;Harwood Museum, Taos, NM2006 Language:The Interconnections between Images and the Written Word,Rotunda Gallery,New Mexico State Capitol- Rotunda Gallery2001 Spirited Wanderings, Northern Michigan University Art Museum,Marquette, MichiganCareer Highlights:Creative Santa Fe PechaKucha presentation Vol. 23; Site Santa Fe auditoriumNovember 2024Chhaap Foundation for Printmaking, Artist Residency, Gujarat, India Winter 2018Santa Fe Art Institute Residency program, Water Rights, Fall 2016Jentel Artist Residency- November-December 2014The Artist is In, public presentation of ongoing project Open Letters from Hotel Central; AxleContemporary, Santa Fe, New Mexico, July 2013Anderson Ranch, Paint Installation Systems, 2012Creative Capital Professional Development Program, 2012Public Collections: New Mexico Museum of Art permanent collection 2017 New Mexico Central Community College, NM AIPP 2016 Herradura Collection 2013 Hyatt Collection 2009 Santa Fe Community College, Dean’s Purchase Award 2009EducationUniversity of Colorado, BoulderBibliography Cosas: Kathleen McCloud’s ‘Out of the Blue’, by Michael Abatemarco June 4, 2021https://www.santafenewmexican.com/pasatiempo/art/cosas-kathleen-mcclouds-out-of-the-blue/article_96df905c-b987-11eb-92ef-ebfc30ddbe03.html· Don’t Fence Me In, essay by Marina de Bellagente la Palma, 2019· Hinchas de Poesia, Spring 2016 http://www.hinchasdepoesia.com/dev2185215/kathleen-mccloud-border-crossing/The Eye who Came in from the cold, by Richard Tobinhttp://issuu.com/flavorgrafix/docs/_the_april_issue-web/51?e=1811192%2F12202256 THEmagazine, April 2015 Odes and Offerings, collaborative exhibition of poetry and visual art, catalogue, 2013· Open Letters from Hotel Central: Correspondence between Henry Miller, Emil Schnellockand Posterity Project article ‘’NEXUS:The International Henry Miller Journal’’Vol.10 Fall2013· Kathryn Davis interview on ArtBeat, KVSF 101.5 Hutton Broadcasting, Santa Fe, NMOctober 17, 2013 (http://www.kathleenmccloud.com/works/3d.php)· Michael Abatemarco, Séance with Henry Miller and Emil Schnellock, The New Mexican-Pasatiempo, January 11, 2013, p.36-37· Paul Weideman, Surfing the Third Wave, The New Mexican-Pasatiempo, March 18,2011, p 36-37
