Born on March 21, 1880, in Weißenburg, Germany, and passed on February 17, 1966, in New York City, Hans Hofmann is a recognized German-American painter both as an artist and also a teacher. Raised near Munich, Hofmann was familiar with and active in early twentieth-century European avant-garde movements. Moving to the United States in 1932, Hofmann had his first New York solo show at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century in 1944, which was praised by the influential critic Clement Greenberg. Not only was he an influential artist, but in 1915, Hofmann started an art school in Munich, establishing what some call the first modern school of art anywhere. Once in the United States, he reopened the school in both New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts. He retired in 1958 to continue painting full-time.
