Haitian painter Gibert Desir was born in 1930 in Jacmel. After only four years of primary school, he continued his education via private tutors. On the recommendation of his famous uncle Prefete Duffaut, he registered at the Centre d'Art in 1958, where he studied for three years. A full-time painter with two children, his style is heavily influenced by P. Duffaut. (Source: Haiti Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera by John Allen Franciscus, 1980, pp. 60)
