Carl Almquist was a celebrated Swedish designer of stained glass who worked for the British firm of Shrigley and Hunt as their principal designer. Shrigley's began in the 1750s as a painting, carving, and gilding firm in Lancashire, England. In 1868, control of Shrigley's was passed to Arthur Hunt, who ran a stained glass and decorating business in the south of England. In 1878, the firm became Shrigley and Hunt. The firm maintained showrooms in Lancaster and London. With Hunt's death in 1917, leadership of the firm passed to Joseph Fisher. After having survived a devastating fire in 1972, the firm closed for good after Fisher died in 1982. Shrigley and Hunt made windows for many churches, throughout the UK and on the continent of Europe. As well as stained glass, Shrigley and Hunt made ceramic tiles; in the late 19th century these formed an important part of the income of the company. The firm also produced stenciled wall and ceiling decorations. The two drawings in our inventory are designs for a large window "Christ in Glory. Worshipped by Angels," installed in Christchurch, Latchford, Cheshire, England. The two images (from a series of four) are instantly recognizable in the window, each in its own kite-shaped opening. The drawings represent the six-winged seraphim, the highest order of angles, whose name means "the burning ones," closest to the throne of God. (See Yeshayahu/Isaiah, 6:1-7)
