"The objective of Villard Studios/Art Colony Editions has been to produce a sequential series of color woodcuts inspired by the natural beauty of indigenous Maine. As Franco-American artists, we have consciously based the images in an art/science fusion model influenced by our surrounding environment. In 2002, we published a syllabus proposing 10 subjects to be presented in hand bound volumes of natural history observations in order to provide an antidote to global turmoil present at that time. Hence, we focused on a Modern and American Art method of color printmaking i.e., the White-Line Woodblock Print or Provincetown Print. It has become our signature medium, while diligently preserving the history of this printing technique. By collaborating with community members, scientists, guest artists and field experts, our vision was distinctly influenced and enhanced, while weaving a cohesive wordless narrative within the series. Education and memories formed a dynamic team that served as the momentum and inspired us to complete a body of work that spanned 15 years, hundreds of White-line Woodcuts and culminated in ten consecutive and two hors-series volumes. During the production process, our team navigated a course which completed images that became a visual encounter layered in color, technique, individual style and originality. In parallel, we developed teaching teaching tools, a catalogue raisonné and an innovative timeline depicting the history of printmaking. The finished project has become a vivid kaleidoscope of imagery, form and historic documentation. Each print is designated with an official certificate of registration and an explanation plate detailing genus species along with anecdotes for the viewer. This one-of-a-kind series is the first to document White-line Woodcuts in a bound format."
