Born on November 16, 1936, IAIN BAXTER& (born Iain Baxter) is an internationally recognized Canadian conceptual artist and photographer. He integrates installation, sculpture, painting, photography, drawing and performance into his works, and has been awarded many accomplishments such as the Officer of the Order of Canada (2003), Companion of the Order of Canada (2019), Member of the Order of British Columbia (2007). In his early career, N.E. Thing Co. was created by both IAIN and his partner, Ingrid Baxter in 1966. With a focus on photography and site-specific installations, N.E. Thing Co. pioneered some of the earliest Vancouver photo conceptual works. BAXTER& had his name legally changed from Ian Baxter to IAIN BAXTER& to reflect his interest in the ampersand as a symbol but also represent his views on "non-authorial take on art production... an unending collaboration with the viewer and the means to question the artist's role."
