Matthew Hanzman (B.1996) is a self taught figurative painter based in New York and Miami. His paintings deal with themes such as the search for meaning, freedom and being an outcast, channeling the aesthetic of old school cartoons, comics and video games while maintaining human craftsmanship and emotion. Matthew’s distinct world of Lone Travelers, a familiar yet strange universe of his own invention. Dive into these vivid scenes, each one pure and surreal like cartoons, each one telling the story of an outcast. Tropical escapes, prehistoric adventures, dreamy desolation and many more exciting escapades make up this oasis universe. In it, we feel the joys and sorrows of solitude, from freedom and bliss to angst, confusion and alienation as these characters wander on their own paths. Animal friends and bizarre motifs add to these far out journeys and each canvas sparks joy and reflections. They are all honest portrayals, so crisp and graphic they seem digital while remaining raw. Each one is an episode in the psychedelic saga. Hanzman’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States in both solo and group presentations and is held in public and private collections spanning several countries. His DIY spirit of originality and authenticity is reflected in his powerful, personality packed paintings.
