Hui-Yong was born and raised in South Korea. In 2009, she moved to Portland, Oregon from Singapore where she studied with Master Chuan Sian Boon. Hui-Yong's love for ceramics started in 2008; while on vacation in America. During the visit, Hui-Yong had an opportunity to tour a ceramic studio and create a piece of pottery. During this process, she was so fascinated on how she could manipulate the shape and by the transformation of turning mud to beautiful art. When Hui-Yong returned home to Singapore, she immediately registered for her first ceramic class. Over the years, Hui-Yong has mainly been inspired by traditional Asian elegant forms of ceramics. As an artist, Hui-Yong aims for flawless perfection in all her pieces; which requires countless hours of practice, patience, and dedication. After studying with Master Chuan Sian Boon in Singapore, she further studied at the Portland Community College Ceramic studio, learning to incorporate works heavily influenced by the elegance of traditional Asian art forms with the spontaneous creativity of American culture.Hui-Yong now creates her art in her home studio. Hui-Yong has alwas had much love for the galaxy above us and was ispired to name her business, Galaxy Clay, after it. Many of glazes Hui-Yong mixes for her pieces resemble the far-out galaxies of our solar system. Each piece she creates is its own mini galaxy.
