Frederick Heidel (1915-2000) was born and raised in Corvallis, Oregon. He was a prolific and well respected artist known for his bright and expressive acrylic paintings and his laminated and fused glass sculptures.Heidel taught for over 35 years, first at the Biarritz American University in Biarritz, France, as well as Long Beach City College in California, and the University of Oregon. He became a professor of art at Portland State University in 1951 where he taught and was the Chairman of the Art and Architecture department until 1980. In 1967 he received the Chapelbrook Foundation Grant to work in the Netherlands in the glass factories. From then he began to create laminated glass sculptures that he became known for. Both his work in acrylic and in glass sculpture reflects his love of the Expressionists.He exhibited his work internationally as well as domestically in places such as the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, the Smith Andersen Gallery in Palo Alto, California, and Glasgalene Kuhler in Amsterdam.Heidel received his first Bachelor's degree in painting from the University of Oregon. Later he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago.
