Katie has always loved using her eyes and hands and making art. She graduated from Hendrix College in 1998, majoring in studio art. In 2002, she received a Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia. After working in architecture for many years, she decided to dedicate her time to her true love of painting. As a student and into her early years, Katie used the human figure as the subject of her work, choosing to focus on what we don't notice first. By obscuring the face, the viewer is more likely to notice the structure and shape the body takes when it is sitting or standing. Or the way gravity and movement change the composition of clothes being worn. In the past several years, Katie has turned her attention to floral arrangements. As with painting human figures, she is interested in what we don't see when we first look. Leaving the intricate blossoms as flat shapes, definition and detail is given to the structure of the leaves and stems. An overhead view accentuates the motion of how they fall in relation to each other. The infinite color palette and variety found in nature have provided her endless variations to explore. She has found each piece to be a joyful meditation.
