Susie Whitcombe, a founding member of the Society of Equestrian artists, is best known for her paintings and drawings of horses and ponies. Initially self-taught, she drew inspiration from her mother, who was both an excellent draughtsman and stockman; it was from her that Susie learnt to look at animals objectively. She went on to train under John Walton at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London and developed an appreciation for the work of Wilfred de Glehn, Joseph Crawhall and Tom Coates. She can be found painting almost anywhere in the world where horses are entwined with the way of life. One of her favourite locations is Australia, which she first visited in 1976. Susie’s first solo show was at the Malcolm Innes Gallery on Walton Street in 1981; since when, she has been a regular exhibitor at leading galleries in London, Kentucky, Melbourne and Tokyo.Particular about colour, freedom of line and brush stroke, Susie likes to work quickly and instinctively. She paints from life which gives her pictures the delightful energy, movement and joie de vivre for which they are so widely known.
