Emma June Jones (b. 2000) is an artist from Chicago, IL currently residing and working in New York, NY. She graduated in 2023 with a BFA in Illustration and a minor in Art History from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Jones’s focus is on distorted figure paintings made in oil; they examine internal battles young women face in today’s social and political climate. Her paintings mold bodies in a collapsed space while emphasizing the external environment, fashion, and symbolism to reflect contemporary issues. Her current work can be viewed at the group exhibition at ShopSCAD in Savannah, GA as well as online. Artists Statement: 'Twenties' portrays women subjectively, framing them as privileged in modern society. Amidst the chaos of our culture, these paintings serve to illustrate the tumultuous journey of women in their twenties. They transform imaginative environments into performances, creating a sense of unreality to enhance vulnerability. Subjects are often placed against backdrops or confined within the canvas's boundaries, evoking a stage-like setting. Despite the exposure that a spotlight brings, the bodies are depicted with minimal clothing and muted faces. The physical composition features multiple figures, portraying a sense of movement, transitioning from a collective portrayal to a singular figure, often accompanied by animals symbolizing inner emotions. Each environment represents a struggle or disaster caused by the subject, emphasizing the notion that we can be our own worst enemy.
