GIACOMO PIUSSI (Italian b. 1967-)Painter Native Italian Giacomo Piussi was raised in Florence and attended Istituto d’arte where he majored in sculpture and painting. He also attended Milano’s Brera Art Academy. Piussi has exhibited in Florence, Rome, Milan, and Berlin. He leaves much to the viewer in his tranquil depictions of everyday life, which offer an “impression” of his subjects without the distracting noise of too many details.Giacomo’s work develops the idea of substituting the written word with images that are typical of much of the art of non-literate societies of the past. “My work is simple”, Piussi says, “the subject matter is stripped to basics, so all that is engagement, controversy and links to reality is taken away, and what remains is an icon with an aura of philosophical suspension, and a window into the enigma of existence. In the same way that Perseus could only view Medusa as a reflection, my art gives a mirror image of the world, a reflection that merely resembles reality, yet it is not. It bears the semblance of nature only in order to create new priorities, the first one being setting the proper context for the creation of an image. The canvas is a set where everything is staged. Reality has been redacted to a single statement, a single frame, a clip that holds the essence of life. No past, no future, just the here and now. The subject matter is a pretext: a commonplace, a cliché, an artistic quote. A familiar image is taken apart then reassembled and cast in a different light, revealing more complex layers in everyday reality, an almost sacred aura to common gestures. My paintings are a bridge towards early Christian and medieval art and the feeling of awe and amazement they shine on what is represented, that primeval almost pagan yearning of Deity. Human beings, animals, plants, are all placed there by a Divine power, they have a mystical presence beyond their earthly appearance, eternal idols on an everyday altar."
