Ian Varney completed his Advanced Diploma of Fine Art in 2004 at LaTrobe Street College of Art and New Media in Melbourne, Australia. He was a Toronto based Family Physician for 38 years. Ian Varney is a contemporary Canadian artist whose work explores the beauty and rhythm of shoreline landscapes through abstraction and expressive line. After a 38-year career as a Toronto-based family physician, Ian shifted his focus entirely to art, completing his Advanced Diploma of Fine Art in 2004 at the LaTrobe Street College of Art and New Media in Melbourne, Australia. Deeply inspired by water and the natural world, Ian finds endless creative energy at his lakefront home and studio on Soyers Lake in Ontario’s Haliburton Highlands. His work often reflects the dynamic tension between land, water, and sky—drawing from both the rugged Canadian landscape and the dramatic coastlines of Australia, where he lived for many years and ultimately became a citizen. Ian’s current body of work reimagines these landscapes through a mix of media and surface treatments, including canvas, birch panels, and Claybord. His paintings are layered with bold lines—squiggles, drags, and defined strokes—that echo the contours of the natural world while inviting the viewer into something more intuitive and abstract. Each piece is a visual meditation on place, memory, and movement—an invitation to see familiar landscapes in a new light.
