Born on February 21, 1902, Gustel Morton spent her childhood years in Brussels. She and her husband emigrated from Europe to America and landed in New York through Ellis Island in 1926. Gustel studied under a three year scholarship at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School with Ture Bengtz and Karl Zerbe. Morton exhibited her sculpture at the Boston Arts Festival and the Boston Society of Independent Arts. Her wooden sculpture, “Brassua” won First Prize at the Natick Art Association in 1957. She won the Jury Award for Sculpture in 1958 at the Cambridge Art Association and also the Popular Vote for Sculpture in 1958 at the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Morton had a one person show at the North Truro Art Center in 1961. Gustel Morton, already a nonagenarian, was the first living artist to be represented by James R Bakker Antiques, Inc. Mrs. Morton died on December 8, 1996.
